Every year, global production of plastic sachets is estimated to be at least 999 billion. [1]
Multilayer packaging like sachets, pouches, and wrappers are not widely collected for recycling in Canada. Even where they are collected, there is no true recycling process for them. Instead, to keep them out of landfills, they’re often burned — polluting our atmosphere and causing more harm to our planet. [2]
It’s nearly impossible to avoid multilayer packaging like granola bar wrappers, potato chip bags, ketchup packets, and dishwasher detergent wrappers when we’re buying food and other necessities.
The federal government’s ban on single-use plastics only covers around 3% of our annual waste and doesn’t include multilayer packaging like sachets, pouches, and wrappers. [3] [4]
From seabirds eating bottle caps to whales with stomachs full of plastic bags, the effects of plastic pollution are devastating. In a recent coastal clean-up, food wrappers were the most common trash item littering beaches. [5]
Instead of using disposable packing, we can use reusable packaging and bulk methods to offer zero waste, non-toxic delivery methods that are accessible for all.
Tell the government to expand the ban on single-use plastic to include multilayer packaging like sachets, pouches, wrappers and other problematic plastics.
