Oil and other resources have long been used to justify violence, destabilizing whole regions and stripping people of their rights. Meanwhile, fossil fuel corporations and the governments that protect them accumulate enormous profits.
Carney must stand against Trump’s war agenda and keep Canada out of oil wars and all resource exploitation that drives conflict, oppression and ecosystem collapse.
Add your name to this open letter and tell Carney to reject invasion & exploitation. No more wars. Not for oil, not for power, not for profit.
To Mark Carney,
Trump is tearing up international laws and accelerating a system where power and money dictate control. It’s time for you to pick a side. Canada must stay out of illegal wars and champion diplomacy and global cooperation.
Twenty years ago, it was Iraq. For years now, it has been the daily reality for the people of Ukraine, Sudan and Palestine. Just a few weeks ago, it was Venezuela and Cuba. And now, the war against Iran is spreading to other countries in the region. Tomorrow, it could well be Canada's turn. Where will it end?
These are not isolated moments. They are part of a long pattern of military intervention, coercion, and violence tied to the control of land, resources, and profit.
During your speech at the WEF in Davos, you spoke about how “the system persists. Not through violence alone, but through the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false.” Canada must stop participating in this system where oil and resource interests decide whose lives are protected, and whose are disposable. Standing up to Trump means more than just a lofty statement: it means condemning this illegal war and refusing to participate.
Oil and other resources have long been used to justify violence, while fossil fuel corporations and the governments that protect them accumulate enormous profits.
As it stands, Canadian oil producers are expected to cash in $90 BILLION in excess profits, and that’s just with the war in Iran. [1] But this isn’t supply shock—after all, only 2% of Canada’s oil is sourced from the Gulf. [2,3] This illegal war may be disrupting the global market, but profiteering is what’s happening here, all while people across Canada struggle with the ever-escalating cost-of-living crisis.
We must end our reliance on fossil fuels and the instability they bring. Sun and wind cannot be blockaded, weaponized or controlled by tyrants. We must not only reject oil, but all resource exploitation that drives conflict, oppression and ecosystem collapse.
We know that we don’t need to rely on fossil fuels to power an energy efficient world. A just transition to a renewable future can meet (exceed) our needs, create stable jobs, and protect the living world we all depend on.
In unity and hope,
