Facebook Twitter / X Email Copy link Bluesky WhatsApp ![GP0STR53A\_PressMedia (2500px) (1)](https://act.greenpeace.ca/hubfs/GP0STR53A_PressMedia%20(2500px)%20(1).jpg) ## Taxpayers shouldn't be funding risky pipelines Most people across Canada oppose taxpayer-funded pipelines, and two-thirds support building more renewable energy projects. \[1,2\] Yet, as countries around the world rapidly transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy \[3\], **Canadian leaders are stuck in the past.** Even the private sector knows there’s no business case for more pipelines in a world where wind and solar energy are cheaper, cleaner, and faster to deploy. **Now our government is about to invest public money in pipelines instead.** As of right now, tens of billions of dollars are projected to fund a new West Coast oil pipeline and maybe even a cross-Canada ‘Northern Shield Energy Corridor.’ \[4,5\] This is despite Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s promise last year that “Alberta taxpayers wouldn’t be on the hook to build this pipeline” and Carney signing this pipeline agreement contingent on finding private investors. \[6,7\] **While our political leaders boast about what an “excellent investment” pipelines are \[8\], the evidence shows otherwise.** The oil companies won't even pay for their own new pipelines! New pipelines rely on the demand for oil and gas rising for decades to recoup their costs. There didn’t used to be a realistic alternative for oil for most uses, but recent technological advances have made electric vehicles and heat pumps powered by wind and solar energy a cheaper alternative. Due to the recent disruptions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, oil-importing nations increasingly see a reliance on fossil fuels as high-cost and high-risk relative to home-grown renewables, so they are accelerating their transition off oil and gas. This makes major new export pipelines a risky investment that the private sector is unwilling to take on. ### Since we need energy, what’s the alternative? Thanks to technological advances, wind and solar power are now the cheapest source of electricity, while advances in battery and heat pump technologies mean that electric vehicles and heat pumps can meet most of our needs for transportation and heating/cooling. In addition, recent conflicts have highlighted the geopolitical and economic risk of relying on oil and gas imports, so many countries are accelerating their transition to renewable energy. ### Does Greenpeace support private-funded pipelines? Greenpeace Canada does not support the expansion of any fossil fuel infrastructure - like oil pipelines - in a world already suffering extreme impacts from climate change. We need to drastically reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and luckily for us, it has never been more possible to rapidly adopt renewable energy technologies.
