On November 25 2024, Ontario passed Doug Ford’s Bill 212, also known as the “Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act”. This bill is not about solving the province’s traffic issues. In fact, it's likely to make our roads more congested and dangerous.

Under the law, the Ontario government now has the power to:

  • Rip out existing bike lanes across Ontario.
  • Override municipal authority to install new bike lanes.
  • Remove three critical bike lanes in Toronto.

This bill, presented as a solution to reduce gridlock, could actually do the opposite. A leaked briefing — from Ford's own cabinet — reveals that removing bike lanes could worsen traffic. [1] Studies show that bike lanes are not only good for cyclists. They also reduce collision risks and make roads safer for everyone. [2]

Ontarians are grappling with rising costs of living and an escalating climate crisis. We need to invest in safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation options — like public transit and bike lanes — not wasting taxpayer dollars to tear out the options that already exist.

A snap election is set for February 27th. Right now, political parties of all stripes are vying for our votes. Now’s our chance to make our voices heard. It's time to speak out against Ford’s attack on bike lanes. We must demand that all parties commit to real solutions for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Ontario.
