We all need nutritious food and a healthy planet, but intensive meat and dairy production is putting this at risk.
Emissions from crops that feed livestock account for approximately 28% of all crop production emissions in Canada. [1] Globally, over 14% of greenhouse gas emissions are only coming from livestock supply chains. [2] The main reason for these emissions is the livestock industry’s reliance on harmful factory farming practices — which are tearing down our forests, polluting our water, warming the planet and harming our health. [2]
The environmental impacts of intensive meat and dairy production are growing annually. The livestock industry already contributes more to climate change than road, rail, air, and marine transportation combined. [3]
The responsibility to fight climate change lies first on governments and corporations - not on individuals. However, small changes to consumption habits can have a significant impact by maintaining pressure on governments and corporations profiting from the meat and dairy industry.
It’s possible to savour good food and reaffirm what we care about - our families, our communities, our environment - with every bite. We just need to replace our reliance on industrial meat with greater connection to our food and the people who produce it.
