After 300 civil organizations across the country sounded the alarm on Bill C-2, the so-called Strong Borders Act, the Liberal government responded by rebranding it under a different name, Bill C-12.
But nothing has changed. This bill remains a threat to human rights across the country.
Bill C-12, Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act, could still import Trump-style scapegoating of migrants and asylum seekers.
This isn’t about making our country “safer” or our borders “stronger.” This new law would give the federal government the ability to cancel people’s immigration status in this country en masse. Family, friends, and neighbours could lose their status overnight and face deportation, as long as the government argues it’s “in the national interest.”
This Liberal bill is playing into anti-immigration feelings and encourages people to point the finger at immigrants for our national woes instead of coming together to hold corporations and the ultra-rich accountable for the affordability and housing crises.
We demand better for our friends across Canada. Bill C-12 is not yet law, your voice matters.
