Canada committed to protecting 30% of the global oceans by 2030. But promises on paper aren’t enough – and time is running out for marine life.
In March 2023, a UN Global Ocean Treaty was agreed – and yes, it’s a game changer for ocean protection in the high seas. Finally, global governments have a tool to create protected areas in the oceans beyond the individual control of any one country. But to turn handshakes into conservation action, we need at least 60 countries to sign the Treaty into law by 2025 so it can be acted on.
Ocean creatures and habitats are in dire straits. Climate change, pollution and overfishing are pushing them to the brink of collapse. Food security and the livelihoods of billions of people hang in the balance.
But there is hope.
Scientists have said that ocean sanctuaries can provide the solution: spaces where marine life and ecosystems can recover and thrive, restoring the health of our oceans.
Canada must act urgently to ratify the Treaty to secure 30x30 (30% of the oceans protected by 2030) and a brighter future for our blue planet.
Add your name to call on the Canadian Government to sign the Global Ocean Treaty into law to create new ocean sanctuaries and protect sea biodiversity.
